Can I Drive a Rental Truck to Canada?

September 2020 update: Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, regulations for entry into Canada have changed. Because moving is considered essential business, Canadian citizens, permanent residents and those who meet entry conditions can still enter Canada. Relocating from the United States to Canada is considered an international move — even if driving across the border feels more like driving to another state. If you’re thinking about using a rental truck for your move, it’s important to note that not all truck rental companies permit you to take their equipment across the border. Take a closer look at their policies and procedures, and find the best option for DIY moving into Canada.

Which rental trucks can you drive into Canada?

The information below came from each company’s website or online chat function in August 2020. We recommend confirming these details in case policies have changed. No one wants to be stuck at the border or have to pay extra fees.

Also, make sure you’re aware of everything involved when moving from the U.S. to Canada, and that you’re prepared for driving across the Canadian border.

U-Haul®

Since U-Haul has locations in Canada, you can cross the U.S./Canadian border in a U-Haul truck.  However, since it’s your responsibility to follow the laws and regulations at the border, make sure you know what they are before you start driving.

Budget®

While Budget has rental locations in Canada, they do not allow you to cross the border in one of their trucks.  

Penske®

Penske also has locations in Canada, but they don’t allow one-way moves across the border. You can take a Penske truck into Canada, but you’ll have to return it to a location in the U.S. near the border. If you select the Limited Damage Waiver, make sure they know you’re going into Canada so they can send you a Canadian insurance card.
