Complete Guide to Cheap Truck Rental

Finding a cheap moving truck

One-way moves in a rental truck are cheaper than using full-service movers, but they’re still more expensive than you might think. With extra taxes and fees, liability coverage and fuel, the costs add up quickly. But luckily, there are ways to get the best price for your rental, and there is also a cheap way to move without having to drive!

Cheap truck rental 101

Research isn’t just for school. It’s also essential when shopping for the best rate for a rental truck. Follow these three steps to find the cheapest truck rental.

1. Find truck rental companies that service your area

Check around to see what rental truck companies serve your current city and destination (for dropping off the truck after the move).

2. Look for discounts on moving truck rental

Many rental truck companies will offer discounts on the rates for one-way rental. Any discounts generally won’t apply to extras like liability coverage or the cost of fuel. Some popular companies that offer coupons include Budget®, Penske® and U-Haul®.

3. Get and compare quotes for the cheapest truck rental

Request a quote from each company you’re considering and apply any discount codes. Once you have the estimates, compare them for prices. You’ll also have to make sure you’re getting the services you need from each company for accurate comparison (correct truck size for the move, liability coverage, enough miles to get to the destination, etc.).

It’s also helpful to figure out the fuel costs for each truck based on the estimated gas mileage. Remember that gas mileage for rental trucks may decrease significantly when the truck is fully loaded, which can mean paying more for fuel.
