Need to rent a cargo van?
Whether you’re looking to move a few pieces of furniture or trying to transport overflow from a full rental truck, you may be feeling like there aren’t a ton of options for small long-distance moves. Most cargo vans are only available for local or commercial use, and even the smallest rental trucks may be too big. Find out where you can rent a cargo van, and explore alternative ways to move just a few things if you can’t find one.
Where to find moving vans for rent
If you’re moving out of state, you need a one-way rental (where you pick up and drop off at different locations). However, most leading truck rental companies only offer small moving vans for local or commercial use. While you could use a local rental (and drive it back to return it to the original location), that takes time and extra money for the return trip’s distance and fuel.
Take a look at the different companies, the equipment they offer, and the types of moves they allow with their van rentals.
Truck Rental Company | Cargo Van Equipment | Types of Van Rentals |
---|---|---|
U-Haul® | 9' cargo van | Local rentals only |
Budget® | 11' cargo van | Local rentals, and one-way in limited markets |
Ryder® | 14' light duty sprinter van | Commercial business only |
Penske® | 11' cargo van 11' high-roof cargo van |
Commercial business only |
So what do you do if you can’t find a cargo van for your move? There are ways to move your stuff across the country without renting a one-way van.
Alternatives for small one-way moves
U-Pack® is a DIY moving service that’s comparable to truck rental, except you don’t have to drive. While we can handle moves of any size, our minimum space is equivalent to a cargo van’s capacity. The 9’ U-Haul van has 245 cubic feet of loading space. Here’s how we compare:
- U-Pack ReloCubes® (6’ x 7’ x 8’) have 308 cubic feet capacity
- U-Pack moving trailers have a five linear foot minimum, so 5’ x 8’ x 9’ space, with 360 cubic feet loading capacity. However, you can use as much of the 28’ trailer as you need, and you pay only for the space you use.
Not sure how much space you need? Compare different truck sizes to U-Pack space.
Depending on the location, move date and size, U-Pack prices are often comparable (or even lower) than a cargo van rental. Get a free moving quote online or call us at 844-362-5303844-594-3077 to check rates for your move.
