 ## Keeping everything safe during your U-Pack move

Safety takes on a new level of importance when you’re moving out of state. You’ll want to keep your family safe while traveling and protect your belongings. By choosing U-Pack®, you’ve already started the process for a successful long-distance move.

We’ll take care of your things during transit, but there are steps you can take to secure the equipment while it’s on your property and prepare it for shipping.

## U-Pack provides safety and security measures for our customers

We take the safety and security of your items seriously, whether you're using a [U-Pack moving trailer](http://d8prod.upack.com/how-upack-works/equipment/moving-trailer) or a [ReloCube® container](http://d8prod.upack.com/how-upack-works/equipment/moving-container). Here’s what we do for all moves:

- Include standard liability coverage with every shipment at no extra charge
- Lock exterior doors of moving trailers during transit
- Provide practical advice from moving experts to help you keep belongings safe inside the equipment, from [packing](http://d8prod.upack.com/moving-resources/packing-tips) and [loading tips](http://d8prod.upack.com/moving-resources/loading-tips) to [the best moving supplies to purchase](http://d8prod.upack.com/moving-supplies-and-boxes)
- Secure the storage areas at our service centers

## How to secure U-Pack moving equipment

Both U-Pack moving trailers and ReloCubes equipment have places for customer locks. The chart below provides lock locations and recommendations.

- Internal bulkhead (divider wall) has two locations for a customer lock during transit

Weather-resistant keyed padlock with a minimum 2-inch/51 mm shackle (shank), ¼ inch/6 mm or less in diameter

You’ll keep the keys to your bulkhead lock to access your things after delivery. If you use a lock on the outside trailer doors during loading, you must remove it before we pick up the equipment. The driver will secure the trailer with a company-owned lock for transport.

#### What type of lock works best for the moving trailer?

For moving trailer bulkheads, U-Pack recommends an outdoor-rated lock with a shank at least 2 inches/51 mm long and 1/4 inches/6 mm or less in diameter. Outdoor-rated locks resist rust and corrosion, which makes them ideal for use both outside the trailer during loading and inside on the bulkhead. The longer shank makes it easier to secure the lock properly.

### Locking a ReloCube

ReloCube doors have a latch for installing a padlock to keep the contents secure during transit and storage. The latch holds both doors closed, and you’ll need one lock for each Cube.

As with the bulkhead in the moving trailer, you’ll keep the keys for the locks you use on ReloCubes.

#### What type of lock works best for the ReloCube?

U-Pack recommends an outdoor-rated lock with a shank at least 2 inches/51 mm long and 3/8 inches/9.5 mm or less in diameter for ReloCubes. Rust- and corrosion-resistant locks are necessary because the Cube’s latch is on the outside of the equipment and may be exposed to rain while parked at your home. Locks with shanks at least 2 inches are easier to maneuver and fully engage.

## Additional measures to keep your belongings secure

Besides locking the equipment, here are some other security measures to take for the best outcome:

- Consider parking a vehicle in front of the ReloCube doors overnight.
- [Park the moving equipment](http://d8prod.upack.com/articles/what-you-need-to-know-about-parking-moving-equipment) in a well-lit and visible area, if possible.
- Never leave an unlocked trailer or ReloCube unattended.
