Utah Superlatives
A superlative is the highest degree of something, like the biggest or brightest thing. Utah has some exceptional qualities when it comes to things that are the outliers.
- Kings Peak is the highest point, coming in at 13,534 feet above sea level. If you’d like to see the view from up there, there are three routes to the summit, including an easier hike up the southern slope.
- The tallest building is the Wells Fargo Center in Salt Lake City (422 feet or 24 stories). It has 13 elevators and here are two helipads on the roof.
- The Jardine Juniper Tree in Logan Canyon is the oldest living thing in Utah. At one point, it was thought it was over 3,000 years old, but a core sample taken in the 1950s showed it to be more like 1,500 years old. The tree is dying, but very slowly. There’s a little bit of life still growing at the top.
-
Mount Tukuhnikavitz (which means “where the sun sets last”) is the hardest peak to spell.
- OK, that's not an official award. But it should be!
- The largest higher education institution is Utah Valley University in Orem, with more than 37,000 students. It’s home to one of the largest public collegiate ballroom dance programs in the country.
