  • The first Krispy Kreme Donuts location opened in Winston-Salem in 1937. 

  • Salem College, a liberal arts college founded in 1772, is the country’s oldest educational institution for women. 

  • In 1926, a group of private bus drivers founded the Safe Bus Company, believed to be the largest black-owned transit system in the world until 1972. 

  • The Shell Oil clamshell gas station on the corner of Sprague and Peachtree streets was the first fuel stop in the U.S. to be listed on the National Register of Historic Places. You can’t fill up there anymore, but this unique structure with the two tall pumps outside makes a great photo op! 

  • The historic district of Old Salem was originally settled by the Moravian community in 1753. You can experience this National Historic Landmark today, as it was in the 18th and 19th centuries, by touring its living museums and gardens. 

  • Get a slice of fictional Mayberry at Andy Griffith’s Homeplace in Mt. Airy, just 36 miles north of Winston-Salem. The boyhood home of this beloved actor now operates as a bed and breakfast.
