Before You Go

Don’t leave the oldest city in Rhode Island (established in 1636) without taking in some local history — self-guided walking tours are a great way to do that. Make time for some of these popular spots:

Federal Hill

Providence’s historic “Little Italy” neighborhood is filled with authentic Italian restaurants, bakeries, coffee shops, markets and boutiques.

Historic Benefit Street

Enjoy upscale dining at Mill’s Tavern and visit the Stephen Hopkins House, once the home of Declaration of Independence signer Stephen Hopkins.

Swan Point Cemetery

This 200-acre rural garden cemetery was established in 1846 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Sites.

John Brown House Museum

See original 18th century furniture at the first mansion built in Providence and learn about revolutionary figure John Brown, the house’s original owner.

Get Some Fresh Air

If the weather permits, stroll through one of Providence’s beautiful parks — Waterplace, Prospect Terrace or India Point. Take a ride along the scenic 14-mile stretch of the East Providence Bay Bike Path. Or, explore dozens of beaches across Rhode Island within easy driving distance.

The Big Blue Bug

While driving along Route 95, wave to the Big Blue Bug — also known as Nibbles Woodaway — the mascot of Big Blue Bug Solutions. This steel and fiberglass Eastern subterranean termite is a local icon, having earned the title of World’s Largest Bug at 9 feet tall, 58 feet long and 4,000 pounds.
