Expect warmer weather in the lower 48

Houston is more than 4,000 miles from Anchorage and much farther south, so it’s only natural to anticipate different weather. While Anchorage’s yearly temperatures typically stay between 13 and 75 degrees, making it milder than other areas of the state, you can expect even warmer temperatures of 47 to 95 degrees in Houston. Texas is a safe bet if you’re hoping for less yearly snowfall because the state average is only 0.1 inches per year. The 2021 snowstorm of 20 inches of snow in Houston was rare. 

Experience skyscrapers and bayous

You won’t find majestic mountain ranges in Houston, but you will discover much taller buildings than in Alaska. Houston’s JPMorgan Chase tower is 1,002 feet tall — more than three times taller than Anchorage’s Conoco-Phillips Building, which stands 296 feet tall. Four major bayous pass through Houston. The city was founded at the convergence of the Buffalo and White Oak Bayous, and the Brays and Sims Bayous also flow through the area.

Although Anchorage is the most populated city in Alaska, with just under 300,000 people, Houston has a significantly larger population of 2,304,580. Houston has over three times as many people as the whole state of Alaska — 736,081 people — according to the 2020 U.S. Census.

More than oil and gas industry jobs

While many people may transfer from Alaska to Texas for jobs in the oil industry, many other types of jobs are available in Houston. Home to many Fortune 500 companies, the city also has manufacturing, healthcare, education, research and aerospace jobs. Houston's average annual income is higher than residents in other major metros.
