When moving from Chicago, Illinois, to the East Coast, it’s hard to go wrong with Boston, Massachusetts. Rich history awaits you in Boston

Located in one of the 13 original colonies in the United States, Boston is among the cities with the oldest history. You’ve likely heard of the Boston Tea Party (which is reenacted annually at the museum on December 16) and the midnight ride of Paul Revere. The city also has many historical places to explore.

• Beacon Hill (the city’s most historic neighborhood) 
• Boston Common Park (established in 1634 and is the oldest public park in the U.S.) 
• Boston Light (site of the Little Brewster Island Lighthouse, which was built in 1716) 
• Fenway Park (America’s smallest and oldest ballpark, built in 1912 and home to the Boston Red Sox) 
• The Freedom Trail (known as “the birthplace of the American Revolution”) 
• Harvard University (the first college in North America) 
• USS Constitution Museum (dedicated to the oldest commissioned ship in the United States Navy) 

Will you miss the big-city life? 

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Chicago’s population is around 2.7 million compared to Boston’s just under 650,000. While Boston is vastly smaller in terms of the number of people who live in the city, those residents are more densely populated within the smaller footprint of the city (around 14,000 people per square mile in Boston vs. 12,000 in Chicago). So, if you loved the crowds in Chicago, you’d feel a similar sense of proximity to other people in your new home.  

Plan for similar climates

Despite their distance apart, yearly temperatures are similar for the two cities. Boston typically stays between 23 degrees in the winter and 82 degrees in the summer (22 and 83 degrees for Chicago). You can expect mild, warm summers and cold, snowy winters in Boston as you experienced in your previous city, so don’t forget to bring your snow gear!
