You know D.C., but what about Chicago?
You probably already know that Chicago is famous for its passionate sports fans and deep-dish pizza, much like D.C. is recognized for its architecture, monuments and status as our nation’s political center. But here are some other quick facts you may not know about Chi-Town:
- Chicago is the third-largest city in the U.S. (2.7 million) and is also ranked as the third largest economic center in the country.
- O’Hare Airport is the second busiest airport in the world.
- Lincoln Park is the second most visited park in the U.S. behind Central Park in New York City.
- The idea of a junior college was first developed in Chicago in 1901.
Expect frigid winters and pleasant summers
Because of its location, Chicago is subject to “lake weather” — frequent cold fronts, and storms in the spring and early summer. Chicago, on average, is about 10 degrees cooler (mid-80s) in the summer than hot and humid Washington, D.C. Winter lows in Chicago often drop into the 20s.
Chicago and D.C. are both known for the performing arts
If you’re a fan of the performing arts, you’ll find that Chicago rivals D.C. for world-class shows and productions. Chicago is largely considered to be the birthplace of modern improvisational and sketch comedy in the U.S. In the 1950s, a group of University of Chicago students formed a campus group called the Compass Players, which became The Second City in 1959.
If you can’t see a Broadway show in NYC, catch it in Chicago! Broadway in Chicago impacts the local and state economy with an estimated 9,200 jobs and more than $850 million annually through ticket sales.
