Moving from Chicago, IL to Philadelphia, PA

Moving from the Windy City to the City of Brotherly Love

If you crave the vibe of the big city life in Chicago, you’ll love moving to Philly! While each city offers a bit different experiences, they share enough similarities that the move will be a bit of an easier transition. Read on to learn more about what to expect from your move from Chicago to Philly and see how U-Pack® can help with your move.

How’s the weather there?

Like Chicago, Philadelphians see all four seasons, with hot summers, milder springs and fall and cold winters. However, unlike Chicago, the winters aren’t as snowy or brutal. Temperatures in the winter rarely dip below 13 degrees and snowfall varies, with some winters producing over 70 inches of snow and others producing only trace amounts.

How is the food?

Chicago and Philly are both known for their food options. Philadelphia is known as the birthplace of the famous “Philly” cheesesteak, but it’s also where you will find soft pretzels, roasted pork sandwiches and Tastykakes snack cakes.

What’s there to do in Philly?

There is no shortage of things to do in Philadelphia. From sports to art to educational opportunities, Philadelphia offers something for everyone. Here’s a few of the top attractions:

  • Sports. If sports is your thing, you’re in luck. Philly has a team in all four major sports leagues: the Phillies (MLB), the Flyers (NHL), the 76ers (NBA), and the Eagles (NFL) all call Philadelphia home. Additionally, six colleges compete in sporting events in the area and the city has a number of semi-pro and amateur teams that compete in sports like soccer, rugby, ultimate Frisbee and more.
  • Outdoor activities. Want to spend some time outdoors? Philly has you covered here, as well! The city has more than 10,000 acres of parks, including Fairmount Park, which is the largest landscaped park in the world. It contains more than 60 different parks inside of it. There are also many public art displays, murals and sculptures located around the city and a number of hiking and camping spots in the area, as well.
  • Educational opportunities. Get to know your new city by checking out some museums and historic sites. Check out the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Liberty Bell, the Franklin Institute or Independence National Historical Park to get a feel of the history and culture of your new home.

How is traffic?

Most major cities like Chicago and Philadelphia have a lot of traffic. And when compared to Chicago, the congestion level is about the same. According to navigation and GPS mapping company TomTom, Philadelphians spend about 100 hours a year stuck in traffic, compared to 111 hours a year in Chicago. But, like in Chicago, Philadelphia has a vast public transit system that consists of busses, subway lines, elevated trains, trolleys and a number of public service vehicles like cabs and ride sharing options, to help alleviate concerns with congestion.
