Moving from Denver, CO, to Phoenix, AZ

Moving to a warmer capital city in the Southwest

Be prepared for some adjustments when moving 820 miles from the “Mile-High City” of Denver, Colorado, to Arizona. The capital city, Phoenix, is often called the “Valley of the Sun,” and you’ll understand why as you get used to the desert climate in your new city.

You won’t need your Colorado snow gear since snowfall is almost unheard of in Phoenix, with winter lows averaging 43 degrees. Summers in Phoenix are generally dry and warm, with temps near 100 degrees—quite the contrast to highs of around 89 degrees in Denver.

The climate in Phoenix is drier, averaging only 9 inches of rain each year, about half what Denver gets.

Find fulfilling jobs in Phoenix

Due to its climate, tourism is a top job market in Phoenix. Many people start their desert vacation in the city due to the location of the Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, which gets around 45 million travelers each year.

Hospitality not your cup of tea? Phoenix also offers many career opportunities in technology within its growing hub and financial services with companies like American Express, Bank of America, JPMorgan Chase & Co. and Wells Fargo.

Those in the healthcare field can find work at Banner Health, Dignity Health and Phoenix Children’s Hospital.

Enjoy lower costs and outdoor living

Life in Phoenix is typically less expensive than in Denver. You’ll find housing, groceries and transportation to be more affordable. Do your research to find the best neighborhood to fit your budget and lifestyle.

Like Denver, there are multiple things to do outside in Phoenix year-round. Explore the Sonoran Desert for hiking and biking, and don’t miss nearby places like Camelback Mountain and the Superstition Mountains. Just make sure to stay hydrated and pack some sunscreen for the nearly 300 days of sunshine Phoenix gets each year.

Embrace Native American culture

Phoenix has a rich Native American heritage. It’s apparent in the food and artwork in the region. Check out the Phoenix Art Museum, the Heard Museum and the Pueblo Grande Museum Archaeological Park for some examples.

Phoenix has many other fun attractions, including the Hall of Flame Fire Museum, the Phoenix Police Museum, the Musical Instrument Museum and the Children’s Museum of Phoenix.
