Moving from Reno, NV to Phoenix, AZ

Embrace the vibrance and beauty of the Valley of the Sun

More than 16 million visitors come through Phoenix each year, making it a popular vacation destination. But Arizona’s capital city is also the sixth-largest in the U.S. with more than 1.7 million residents. Since you’re about to join them, here are some helpful things to know about moving to Phoenix, AZ from Reno, NV

Pro tip: Stick around until the end and learn how one company is designed to add value to your long-distance relocation!

Soak up all the sun you could want

Phoenix isn’t called the Valley of the Sun for nothing. It gets more than 300 days of sunshine per year, the most of any U.S. metropolitan city (the national average is 205). Rain is scarce and temperatures average far above 100 degrees from June through September. By contrast, Reno has milder summers and significant winter snowfall because of its elevation (4,500 feet).

Be part of a diverse job market

Like Reno, Phoenix has a thriving economy. The city is home to several Fortune 500 companies, including Sprouts Farmers Market, Republic Services, Avnet and Magellan Health. Top Phoenix employers include makers of electronic equipment, air conditioning equipment, leather and aircraft parts. Because of its status as a vacation destination, tourism and hospitality sectors thrive there as well.

Bigger city equals more urban sprawl

Reno and Phoenix both have pedestrian-friendly downtown areas, but having a car is critical in both cities. However, traffic is much more of a factor in Phoenix because of the size difference — nearly seven times the population of Reno with more than 500 square miles of land mass. Parking is plentiful in Phoenix with more than 25,000 spaces in downtown alone. This is helpful because with limited public transportation, Phoenicians get around primarily by car. And because the city is laid out on a grid system, it’s easy to navigate.

Endless entertainment options await

Nestled in the shadow of the Sierra Nevada mountain range, Reno is built on tourism and gaming, but offers many cultural and outdoor options as well. Fortunately, you can find many similar outlets in the Phoenix area.

Phoenix boasts a picturesque desert landscape, a vibrant nightlife and is close to nature, which is an uncommon combination in a large urban setting. Six lakes sit within a 75-minute drive of downtown Phoenix, along with an assortment of hiking and biking opportunities and more than 200 golf courses throughout the area.

Seeking other fun opportunities? Head to Roosevelt Row just north of downtown for fine art, shopping and live performances — and don’t miss the murals and street art filling this district. Architecture buffs can explore Taliesin West, Frank Lloyd Wright’s winter home and school. Phoenix is also home to five professional sports teams and an annual PGA Tour event. For college sports fans, the Arizona State Sun Devils compete in nearby Tempe.
