Moving from Canada to the U.S. without breaking the bank
Moving to a new country is a bit more complicated than moving to another state. And because getting yourself and your belongings across the border and through customs can be confusing and pricey, it helps to find an efficient and cost-effective moving service to keep you on track (and within budget).
A self-moving service like U-Pack is often the cheapest solution to move from Canada to the U.S. (or in the other direction).
How does U-Pack® offer cheap moves to and from Canada?
We’re able to offer reasonable shipping rates for our customers through our transportation partner, ABF Freight®. But that’s not the only way we keep our services budget friendly. We also:
Only charge for services you need
Our prices are much more affordable than full-service movers since you’re not paying for moving labor you may not want or need. With U-Pack, you handle the packing, loading and unloading, and then we take care of transporting your belongings across the Canadian/U.S. border so you’re free to travel with your family.
Have low fees for processing Customs forms
U-Pack is equipped to help with processing Customs paperwork — and we don’t charge high fees for this service.
The processing fee is $60* for moves from the U.S. to Canada, and we’ll file the paperwork on your behalf. This means you should only have to visit Canadian Customs once to clear the shipment before final delivery.
For moves from Canada to the U.S., the processing fee is only $42.50* and we’ll clear your shipment through U.S. Customs for you.
*Fees were accurate at time of posting in March 2023.
Offer flexible moving space
Full-service movers often estimate the weight of shipments and then charge a final price after the move which can lead to unpleasant surprises. U-Pack doesn’t work that way. We keep our prices low by charging for the space you use, not the weight of the shipment. While requesting a free online quote, just select the size of your home and we’ll estimate the space needed in a moving trailer or the number of ReloCube® moving containers you’ll need. It’s that easy!
In the moving trailers, you can use down to a minimum of 5 linear feet or up to 28 feet for the whole trailer (or even all or part of a second trailer for larger homes). Just look for the per-foot rate on your moving quote to see how your price could increase or decrease based on the space you use. With ReloCubes, you can order what you think you need and only pay for the ones you use. Any unused Cubes will be picked up at no extra cost to you.
No matter which moving equipment you use, packing and loading efficiently to fill as little space in the trailer as possible (or fewer Cubes) can save you money!
How does U-Pack figure the cost of moving between Canada and the U.S.?
To offer an accurate quote, U-Pack needs several details: the origin city, destination, home size and moving date. For moves out of the country, it’s best to request a quote as far in advance as possible to ensure equipment availability, but at least 2-3 months beforehand if possible.
Of course, moving prices will vary based on the details of each unique move and equipment availability in the area. Here are some example U-Pack quotes to give you an idea of our prices:
Moving a 2-bedroom home or apartment to the U.S.
- Montreal, Quebec, to Indianapolis, Indiana, 13 linear feet of trailer space: $2,074*
- Montreal, Quebec, to Denver, Colorado, 13 linear feet of trailer space: $4,104*
Moving a 2-bedroom home or apartment to Canada
- Salt Lake City, Utah, to Vancouver, British Columbia, 2 ReloCube moving containers: $3,389*
- St. Louis, Missouri, to Vancouver, British Columbia, 2 ReloCube moving containers: $4,719*
*Prices were accurate at time of posting for moves in May 2023 and do not include Customs processing fees. Actual moving costs will vary.
