Moving from Seattle, WA to Denver, CO
Into thin air: Find your comfort zone a mile high
Seattle and Denver are two of America’s fastest-growing, most scenic and socially progressive large cities. Their popularity is reflected in the U.S. News & World Report Best Places to Live rankings for 2021: Denver is No. 2 (behind neighboring Boulder, CO) and Seattle is No. 13.
If you’re planning to relocate from the Emerald City to the Mile High City, you’ll discover a lot to like. Read on to find out how the two compare, then learn about the easiest and most efficient way to complete your 1,300-mile move.
Denver’s not cheap, but it’s less expensive than Seattle
Denver’s housing costs have climbed along with its population. But with more room to spread out, you’re more likely to find places that fit your budget. The median home value is $390,600 (compared to $663,000 in Seattle) while rent in Denver averages $1,300 ($1,600 in Seattle).
Get ready for more sunshine
Lacking Vitamin D in Seattle? Get ready to retire your SAD lamp. You’ll find lots of sunshine in Denver, where despite the snowy winters, you can expect 300 sunny days a year. Denver also has four distinct seasons, while Seattle tends to have the same overcast and wet weather year-round (38 inches of rain per year on average).
Enjoying the great outdoors
Concerned about missing those day trips to Mount Si and exploring Discovery Park? Fear not — Denver has more than 5,000 acres of trails, parks, golf courses and playgrounds. Red Rocks Park and Cherry Creek State Park are each about 30 minutes away from downtown Denver. And within an hour, you can be skiing and snowboarding in the Rocky Mountains.
Stay connected with live entertainment
Good news for Seattle sports fans: You’ll feel right at home in Denver with five professional teams to root for — the NFL’s Broncos, the Rockies (MLB), the Nuggets (NBA), the Avalanche (NHL) and the Rapids (MSL). And if you’re craving the big-time college sports atmosphere you enjoyed at the University of Washington, hop over to Boulder — just 30 miles north of Denver — to catch games at the University of Colorado.
Music lovers must make a pilgrimage to Red Rocks Amphitheater, one of the premier and most picturesque live music venues in the country.
Options for getting around
Denver has nearly twice the land area of Seattle, but public transit in the Mile High City isn’t quite as expansive. Like Seattle, many neighborhoods in Denver are walkable. But it helps to have a car, especially if you commute.
However, there are alternatives. The RTD light rail has expanded to include service to Boulder and the Denver International Airport, while the RTD offers commuter bus service throughout the area. Also, cycling is big there. B-Cycle, a local bike sharing company, has 700 bikes available at 88 stations across the metro area.
