How to Prepare for Movers

Get the most out of hired moving labor

When moving with a DIY service like U-Pack®, paying by hour for moving labor can make the process easier, especially if there are bulky items or stairs to deal with.

But since the crew’s time is limited, you’ll want to make the most of it. Use these tips to prepare for the movers so you can head to your new home quickly and safely.

6 tips for working with movers

Here’s what you need to do to be the best customer:

1. Have equipment delivered early

No one wants to pay a crew to stand around. Confirm that your equipment will arrive before the movers to avoid delays or paying for unused time.

U-Pack recommends having equipment delivered the day before the labor is scheduled so the crew can start work immediately. This also allows time to load anything you wish to handle before they arrive.

2. Understand best loading practices

The crew will work under your direction, so it’s important to understand the best ways to load beforehand. Knowing how to set up the trailer ramp and where to place things in the trailer or ReloCube® is helpful while planning for the movers’ arrival.

3. Have the proper supplies on hand

Moving labor crews typically won’t bring any loading supplies with them, and you may not have time to run errands on moving day. Having these items available will help save time and keep your things safe:

  • Basic tool kit (screwdrivers, drill, hammer, tape measure, pliers, wrenches)
  • Moving blankets
  • Packing tape (for securing moving blankets and paper padding)
  • Paper padding
  • Plastic stretch wrap
  • Ropes or straps (to secure items as they’re loaded)
  • Scissors or a utility knife

Pro tip: Keep the scissors, utility knife and tool kit close by for unloading! Either take them with you or pack them last so they’re easy to find at the new home.

4. Prepare your belongings

When packing, make sure boxes are clearly labeled and easily accessible for loading. If you plan to load some items, consider using colored tape to indicate which boxes or things the crew should load.

Oversized items may need extra preparation:

Measure bulky items

Break out that tape measure before the movers arrive to make sure larger things like furniture and appliances will fit through doorways. For extra clearance, remove internal doors ahead of the move for a few more inches of space. Keep a hammer and a Phillips screwdriver on hand to make removing the exterior door easy if needed to get large items outside.

Disassemble large furniture

While some moving crews can do light disassembly, like removing mirrors from dressers, they usually won’t have the tools to completely disassemble furniture. If possible, do this ahead of time so the workers won’t have to wait.

Pro tip: Use a clear zipper-top bag to keep nuts and bolts together to save time when you’re ready to reassemble everything.

5. Clear a loading path

Keep the crew safe by clearing a pathway to and from the moving equipment. Remove any tripping hazards like rugs, cords or water hoses and plan to keep children and pets out of the way for everyone’s safety!

6. Be kind

Treat the workers with respect and show appreciation. Whether moving out or moving in, it’s nice to have water and snacks available for the crew while they work. Saying “thank you” to the movers goes a long way!
