Handling a PCS move with ease
Receiving Permanent Change of Station (PCS) orders is one of the many adventures of military life. Whether it’s your first time or you’re a seasoned pro, managing the necessary tasks for a military move can feel overwhelming.
First, take a deep breath. Next, check out our comprehensive military moving guide to walk through the process, get answers to FAQs and have a successful PCS.
Steps for a manageable PCS
Use our step-by-step guide for the most efficient PCS move.
1. Stay organized
Military moves have many steps and multiple pieces of paperwork you’ll need to reference often. Keeping everything organized in a binder for easy access is the most effective way to stay on top of things.
Along with your PCS binder, try some of these other PCS hacks for an easier military move.
2. Meet with the Transportation Office
Schedule a meeting with the Transportation Office (TO) to review your orders and ask questions about moving service options, weight allowances, reimbursement processes and other related matters. Take note of any important deadlines and requirements so you can align the move date with when you need to report for duty.
3. Review branch-specific regulations
Reimbursement paperwork and processes may vary by branch. We’ve created guides to help you navigate the differences:
4. Choose a mover
Most PCS moves have the option to use a government-contracted moving company or complete a Personally Procured Move (PPM), also known as a DITY (do-it-yourself) move.
With a PPM, you choose the moving company to use and manage the logistics yourself. The government will reimburse you 100% of what they would have paid for government movers, so you can keep anything left. That’s where U-Pack® can help! We offer DIY moving services tailored to the unique needs of military families.
The ability to control the details and potentially earn a profit makes DITY moves a popular choice. But they do require some extra work. Talk about all the plans with your family to choose the best option. Try this DITY move calculator to see your potential costs.
5. Follow your moving plan
Moving requires more than just military-related tasks. Use our moving checklist to keep track of all the essential details, like packing and transferring utilities.
6. Close out your PCS administrative tasks
Follow the Transportation Office’s guidelines to submit your reimbursement claims. You’ll also need to update your contact information with the TO, DEERS, TRICARE and other required systems.
7. Allow time to adjust
Explore your new surroundings, including schools, shopping spots and local restaurants. Join local groups for military families to access resources to help everyone settle in. And don’t forget about the resources available through Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) programs to help your family with the transition.
FAQs about PPM/DITY moves
Get answers to common questions about DIY military moves.
What’s a PPM military move?
A Personally Procured Move, also known as a DITY move, is a move where you handle both planning and execution rather than the government setting it up. With this option, the government pays you 100% of what they would have paid to government movers, and any amount left after paying the moving company is yours to keep.
Where does U-Pack provide military moving services?
We service all 50 states, including bases in Hawaii and Alaska. We can deliver on-base, off-base or to temporary housing. Want to save more? Get a significant discount when you unload at a local service center.
Can I pack my own stuff?
Yes! With a PPM, you pack and load your household goods. If you need help loading or unloading, you can add labor to a U-Pack move through HireAHelper.
What documents are required for PPM reimbursement?
The exact documentation varies by branch, but these documents are typically needed:
- DD Form 2278 (Application for move and counseling checklist)
- DD Form 1351-2 (Travel voucher)
- Copy of PCS travel orders
- Certified weight tickets
- Copy of paid rental agreement
- Copy of vehicle registration when utilizing POV and/or boat/trailer
Your TO will provide the exact requirements.
Note: Keep in mind that lodging and meals are not part of the household goods budget. Still, they may be covered by the Temporary Lodging Expense (TLE) or Temporary Lodging Allowance (TLA, for OCONUS moves) and per diem, so keep your receipts.
Can I move my Pro Gear in a PPM?
Yes, you can move your Pro Gear, but there are limits to the amount and type that can be reimbursed. Read about the guidelines.
