Seven Things to Know About U-Haul Before Renting a Truck

Considering U-Haul for a move to another state?

When planning an out-of-state move, many factors must be considered, from equipment to costs. It’s likely that U-Haul® is on your radar as an affordable way to move your things. While a U-Haul rental is often easy and affordable for moving across town, it can be challenging (and more expensive) for a long-distance move.

Let’s review some key aspects of the U-Haul rental process and see how U-Pack® can be an easier alternative when moving to another state.

7 facts about U-Haul rentals

Keep these things in mind before making a reservation:

1. U-Haul has 5 truck sizes, but not all are available at every rental location

U-Haul offers 5 truck sizes, ranging from 10 ft to 26 ft, and you can choose one based on the size of your home. Exchanging the truck if you need more room to load belongings can be complicated, and not all sizes are available at every rental location. If unsure, the company recommends choosing the largest truck, which could mean paying for more space than you need.

You can also rent other equipment from U-Haul besides moving trucks, but not all locations will carry it. Some locations rent pickup trucks, cargo vans, trailers (cargo, utility and motorcycle/ATV) and U-Box® portable storage containers.

It’s also important to note that rental trucks typically seat 2-3 people, making traveling with a family or pets difficult. Plus, the trucks do not meet the safety requirements for car seats, according to U-Haul’s website — a dealbreaker if you need to travel with young children.

2. Rental rates are not as cheap as you think

Although daily rental rates for local moves are inexpensive, U-Haul rates can be pricey for out-of-state moves, especially when you add the cost of fuel and liability coverage.

U-Haul sometimes offers discounts, but it’s often cheaper to move with a company like U-Pack, which consistently offers lower prices.

3. Not all U-Haul reservations are guaranteed

U-Haul only guarantees confirmed reservations at locations with the “Reservation Guarantee” badge. The guarantee only means you will get moving equipment — not necessarily the size truck you requested.

For locations without the “Reservation Guarantee” badge, U-Haul agrees to contact you at least one day before the move to work on an alternative if the preferred truck size or location is not available. If an acceptable solution isn’t available, the reservation will be canceled.

For all locations, U-Haul will pay you $50 if they fail to meet your preferred time, place or truck size. Either way, you could end up without the right-sized moving equipment or any at all.

4. The trucks have automatic transmissions, but cruise control isn’t a standard feature

All U-Haul trucks have automatic transmissions, but most don’t have cruise control. According to U-Haul's website, select 26’ F650 moving trucks are equipped with cruise control. It’s best to check with a nearby location about the availability of trucks with the feature.

5. Gas mileage is significantly lower than personal vehicles

U-Haul trucks typically average 10-12 MPG, but it can vary based on the terrain and the weight of your belongings. Customers are responsible for paying for fuel during the move.

Maximizing gas mileage is possible by following U-Haul’s recommended speed limits and practicing good driving techniques like avoiding fast acceleration or heavy braking.

Still, you won’t get the same fuel efficiency as a personal vehicle. With U-Pack, you can travel with your family in the comfort of your own car without spending so much time (and money) at the pump.

6. Changing reservations can be complicated

The requirements for renting a U-Haul include a valid driver’s license and a credit or debit card to make a reservation online (some locations might take a cash payment). While reserving a truck, you must select locations for pickup and return. Long-distance moves have a set number of days before extra daily charges accrue to keep it past the allotted time.

Changing the reservation can be complicated because you must contact U-Haul directly to work out the details. This could result in equipment cancellation and having to start all over again.

7. Liability coverage is not included in the rate

Unlike U-Pack, U-Haul does not include liability coverage in the rental rate. Adding a damage coverage plan can add $100 or more to the cost of the move. Going without coverage means you’re liable for any damage you cause while driving the rental truck or allowing someone else to operate it.
