DITY Move Calculator

Estimating military PPM costs and profits

When you’re in the military, moving long distance can be a regular part of life. The government will provide full-service moving for those completing a Permanent Change of Station (PCS). It will also reimburse service members who choose to do a PPM or Personally Procured Move (also known as a DITY or do-it-yourself move) at 100% of what the government would have spent for movers. With this option, you’ll get to keep whatever funds are left over after paying for the move. Keep reading to learn how to estimate the costs of your PPM so you’ll know how much you can keep in your wallet.

Use a free military DITY moving calculator

It’s a good idea to get an estimate for your PPM. You can use the U-Pack® DITY move calculator below to get a free instant quote to help you plan for moving costs. We just need the origin, destination, move date and home size.

Get Quote!

U-Pack quotes include the moving equipment, transportation, standard liability coverage and fuel. Then you’re able to travel with your family and seek any personal travel reimbursements. Plus, with U-Pack, you’ll have more control of your move (moving date, equipment type, etc.) and have the privacy of packing your own things.

To keep costs low, U-Pack bases prices on the space your things take up rather than their weight. But what about the weight tickets you’ll need for reimbursement? Don’t worry! We can provide the weight tickets if you request them at reservation (online or over the phone), and the cost is only $150.

Gather military moving reimbursement information

Reimbursement amounts for service members may vary between military branches and are based on rank, dependents, distance and travel time. It’s best to visit the Transportation Office (TO) on base to find out the exact allowances and any forms you must complete in advance of your move.

Here are some things you’ll want to know:

  • Government Procured Move (GPM) reimbursement amount
  • Dislocation Allowance (DLA)
  • Monetary Allowance in Lieu of Transportation (MALT)
  • Per diem amounts for you and your dependents

Is it possible to make a profit on a PPM?

If the government reimbursement is more than what you’ll pay for your DITY move, then you get to keep the extra money as a profit. Just keep in mind you’ll need to consider all your moving expenses like personal travel, meals, lodging and packing materials. Consult with an accountant or tax professional about any applicable taxes or deductions as a result of your PCS.

Note: If you find that your DITY moving costs are more than the GPM reimbursement amount, you might want to allow the government to handle your move or look for military moving discounts to lower your PPM costs.
