The ins and outs of moving with Air Force PCS orders
When you answered the call to serve in the U.S. Air Force, you also committed to a lifestyle of relocating to different bases. Receiving PCS (permanent change of station) orders is only the first step in the process.
While PCS moves can be similar across military branches, each one has specific protocols. Let’s examine what’s required for the easiest military moving experience in the Air Force.

Familiarize yourself with the Air Force moving handbook
A general PCS checklist will help you stay on track, but understanding Air Force specifics will ensure the smoothest move.
Make sure you understand the protocols outlined in the Air Force Instruction 24-602 Volume 4, which supplements the Joint Travel Regulations (JTR). The regulations apply to all active duty, Reserve, Guard and civilian DOD employees (plus their dependents).
1. Schedule an appointment with the Base Transportation Office (TMO or TO)
This is required for all Air Force moves, whether government or PPM. The session will provide required counseling for weight tickets, claims information and weight limits for household goods (HHG) and Pro Gear.
2. Book the move
The Air Force allows the same three types of moves as other branches: government, PPM (personally procured move, formerly known as DITY or do-it-yourself) or partial PPM.
Note: PPMs are typically not authorized to move overseas.
Government moves
You’ll schedule a government move through the Defense Personal Property System (DPS), and the TMO will finalize it. The move is typically scheduled within 30 days of the report date, but it can vary based on the availability of government contractors.
PPMs
Once the TMO approves your PPM request, you’ll contact a service with experience in military moving, like U-Pack®. U-Pack is prepared to help with your long-distance move and can provide the required weight tickets for reimbursement.
Partial PPMs
The government moves some of your belongings, and you move the rest. This type of move also requires TMO approval.
3. Obtain necessary pre-approvals and certification
Transporting Pro Gear requires pre-approval and certification to prevent it from being included in your HHG weight allowance. The TMO can provide more details based on your rank.
4. Schedule storage and shipments of specialty items
Depending on your move, you might be entitled to temporary storage on or off base. You’ll need authorization in your PCS orders or a memo from the TMO.
Military contracts are required to ship privately owned vehicles (POVs), which must be scheduled through the military’s Vehicle Processing Center. TMO coordination and extra documentation are required for special cargo, like boats.
5. Follow inspection and claims regulations (if required)
Government moves require you to follow quality control (QC) inspection protocols. Any damage claims must be noted immediately upon signing for the shipment and filed with the DPS within 180 days of delivery. If you’re completing a PPM, follow the mover’s procedures for inspecting belongings.
Overview of required Air Force Paperwork
The TMO will provide the specific forms needed for your move, but these are the most common documents:
- DD Form 1299 – to request and authorize shipment/storage
- AF Form 1297 – for certifying Pro Gear
- Weight tickets – signed by TMO for PPMs
- QC inspection forms – keep copies for your records
- Claim forms – in DPS
Adjusting after an Air Force PCS
After moving to a new location or base, it can take time to settle in. The Air Force and other military organizations provide services and programs to help you and your family adjust. Check with your base for more options.
Military and Family Readiness Center (M&FRC)
It’s a one-stop shop for those who recently completed a PCS. The center provides community information, spousal employment assistance, financial counseling and emotional support.
Airman & Family Readiness Programs
The program helps with on-base resources, housing, utilities and schools.
Key Spouse Program
Offers community support for spouses of service members to help them connect with others in the area.
