Moving from Miami, FL, to Boston, MA

Leaving Florida beaches for historic Boston

Moving from Miami to Boston is around 1,500 miles away, and you’ll notice immediate changes in climate, culture and lifestyle. Miami’s city population of around 442,000 is lower than Boston’s 676,000. But when you compare the two metro areas, you’ll find Boston is smaller, with nearly 5 million residents — 1 million fewer than Miami. Keep reading to learn more about how life differs in Boston.

Enjoy all four seasons in Massachusetts

Unlike Miami, which is hot during the summer and mild during the winter, Boston experiences all four seasons. You can expect milder summers and much colder temperatures in the winter. Average yearly temperatures in Boston typically stay between 23 and 82 degrees, while Miami rarely drops below 50 degrees and often has summer temperatures of 90 degrees or more.

Boston’s yearly snowfall averages nearly 50 inches, compared to zero inches in Miami, so make sure to invest in some warm winter gear.

Boston culture

Miami has heavy Latin-American influences, but you’ll find more Irish immigrant culture in Boston. You can also expect a faster-paced lifestyle than you might be used to in Miami.

As one of the original 13 colonies, and the 6th state admitted to the union, Massachusetts has many historic sites to explore, including the Freedom Trail, the Boston Tea Party Ships Museum, and the Old State House Museum. If you’re a baseball fan, don’t miss the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park.

Life in the New England city of Boston

The cost of living can be higher in Boston when compared to Miami. Another thing to keep in mind is that the state of Massachusetts charges a state income tax, unlike Florida. Fortunately, the city has a healthier job market than many similarly sized metro areas with unemployment rates close to the national average.

The largest employers in education include Boston University, Northeastern University and Harvard University. Massachusetts General Hospital, Brigham and Women's Hospital and Boston Children's Hospital are the city’s largest employers in health care. Other important industries are commercial fishing, hospitality and tourism.
