Tips for planning a long-distance move

Much of the success of an out-of-state move comes from proper planning. Try these things to stay on track.

Start with a moving checklist

Use U-Pack’s moving checklist, or make one of your own. List everything you need to do before and after your move to help you stay organized and avoid feeling overwhelmed by the tasks.

Compare quotes and read reviews to choose a reputable mover

Getting quotes from different companies and comparing them is the best way to find a competitive price and value. Just make sure you understand the moving cost estimates and plan for expenses like fuel or liability coverage that may not be included in the quote.

It’s also critical to check reviews to make sure you hire a trustworthy company. Ask friends and family for recommendations and look at business review sites like the Better Business Bureau.

Make reservations and travel arrangements early

Last-minute plans can be expensive and stressful. If possible, make reservations as soon as you know about relocating.

Reserve movers and make any personal travel arrangements, such as airfare and hotel accommodations. Planning ahead gives you a better chance of picking a day that works best for you at a reasonable price.

Out-of-state moving hacks to prepare for the big day

Once you have a date set, it’s time to prep for it. Here are some of the best ways to get ready.

Downsize belongings before packing

Right before relocating is the perfect time to declutter household items so you won’t have to pay to ship things you don’t want. With fewer items to pack, preparing to move is much easier.

Pack for long-distance shipping

When packing belongings, use high-quality materials and utilize the space in the boxes. Label everything clearly and color code for each room to make unloading and unpacking easier. Keeping an inventory of items while packing will be helpful as you set up your new home.

Keep an essentials box or bag for moving day

Designate a box or bag for documents, valuables and things you’ll need immediately, like medications or pet food if you’re traveling with pets. Carry these essentials with you during the move to easily access them.

If you’re relocating with kids, throw in some snacks and activities to keep them busy during travel.

Ask for help (especially if you’re moving alone)

Don’t be afraid to ask for and accept help with your move. Family and friends might be able to help with packing, loading or watching children or pets.

Hiring professionals to help with cleaning (the old or new place) can free your time to focus on more exciting tasks like organizing your new space.

Prepare a moving-day action plan

Organization is the key to a successful moving day. Keep a binder to hold important documents and the movers’ contact information so everything is easily accessible.

Have snacks and beverages in a cooler to keep your energy level up while loading (and later for unloading). Arrange for childcare or pet care to keep everyone safe.

Update address and transfer services

Officially update your address with credit card companies and the post office. Also, remember to arrange to transfer medical, dental and veterinary records and school transcripts.

Contact utility companies to transfer services if you haven’t already done so. To ensure seamless service, contact utility companies at least one week before relocating to have service started so you won’t be in the dark or without water while setting up your home.

To acclimate to your new city, check out its offerings by visiting community groups (online or in person).

Get to know your neighbors and learn what they like best about the neighborhood. Ask for suggestions about things to do or any services you may need.
