How do Penske services work?

Penske’s one-way rentals include unlimited miles, but you get a set number of days to complete the drive. The rental period starts the moment you pick up the truck, which means you’ll need to handle driving home, loading, long-distance travel, unloading, and truck return (in a new location) all within those days. If you need more time due to loading or travel delays, you can get it, but it will cost an extra $200 per day.

You’ll also need to consider the cost of fuel, which isn’t included in your quote. Penske trucks average 12 – 13 MPG, and you’ll pay for the gas or diesel during your trip.

U-Pack services compared to Penske

U-Pack transports your belongings so you can focus on getting to your new home — without the worry and hassle of driving a large moving truck out of state. Choose between flexible space in a 28-ft moving trailer or ReloCube® moving containers

A key benefit of U-Pack vs. truck rental is the flexibility it offers. You only pay for the space filled in the trailer (down to a minimum of 5 linear feet) or the number of Cubes you use (empty Cubes are picked up at no cost!). Plus, you’ll get three business days to load and three more to unload, not included in the transit time, which averages only 4–6 business days.

To help you compare prices, here’s an example quote for a studio apartment move from Charlotte, NC, to Salt Lake City, UT, approximately 2,050 miles. The pricing was accurate at the time of posting for a move in June 2026 and rounded to the nearest dollar. Actual moving costs will vary.

Penske quote

For this move, Penske recommended a 12-ft truck for an estimated total cost of $2,677.

Here’s the breakdown:

  • 12-foot truck (8-day rental): $1,225
  • Fuel (12 MPG at current fuel prices): $712
  • Environmental fee: $15
  • Damage coverage: $666
  • Estimated taxes: $59

Total cost: $2,677

U-Pack quote

For the same example, moving a studio apartment from Cincinnati, OH, to Philadelphia, PA, U-Pack recommended 1 ReloCube moving container for only $2,476. The price included equipment, delivery, transportation and standard liability coverage. Taxes do not apply.

The ReloCube is a bit smaller than Penske’s 12-ft truck, but with U-Pack, you’re not paying for more space than you need or dealing with the hassle of driving a truck.

Plus, when you reserve with U-Pack, your price stays the same as long as your moving details don’t change. That means your price is locked in, even if fuel prices increase. Read more about how gas prices can affect moving costs.
